Prof. Dr. Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit

Head of the Department of Arbovirology – Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNTM), Germany

Research interests: Emerging and Reemerging viruses

Prof. Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit has been leading the WHO Collaborating Centre for Arbovirus and Haemorrhagic Fever Reference and Research at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg, Germany since 2010. In 2018, Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit became Professor of Arbo-virology at the University of Hamburg.

The research groups led by Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit work on Emerging and Reemerging viruses. In this context, one main focus is on viruses that are transmitted by mosquitos. In particular, he investigates the interaction between arboviruses and their vectors. Further-more, he also develops models to better predict arbovirus epidemics.

In PACE-UP, he contributes to the project Ecology of vectors and associated arboviruses in Vietnam. The research aims are to (i) investigate the abundance, richness and diversity of vectors; (ii) characterize the ecology of vectors; (iii) determine the infection rate of arbo-viruses with emphasis on the Flaviviridae family.
